Department Summary:

The Advanced Transportation Operations Optimization Department (P222) in the Center for Integrated Transportation is seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic, and self-reliant candidates with a strong interest in aviation. The ideal candidate will have technical skills in systems engineering, data analytics, software engineering, information systems, or similar areas and will join our department as a Senior Aviation Systems Engineer.

Roles & Responsibilities:

As a key member of the Advanced Transportation Operations Optimization team, you will collaborate closely with ATC experts, analysts, and engineers to optimize and integrate airspace operations from concept development through implementation, and to safely and efficiently deliver operational improvements to diverse aviation stakeholders. You will gain deep insights into sponsor missions and leverage your technical expertise to drive problem-solving, innovation, informed decision-making, and operationalization of concepts. The selected candidate will support work involving Federal, State and Local governments, public and private operators, as well as international partners. You will learn and become an integral part of the team, equipped with technical skills and a strong domain knowledge to succeed within the company. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Processing data using a broad spectrum of tools and technologies to meet both internal and external requirements (R, Python, etc.)

  • Analyzing historical and simulated aviation data to derive conclusions about the current state of the aviation system, and opportunities for improvement and/or integration of new entrants

  • Participating in the development of operational solutions for our sponsors while demonstrating an ability to apply systems engineering best practices, thus facilitating evidence-based decision-making and delivery of impactful outcomes for our sponsors

  • Communicate highly technical analyses and recommendations in a clear and concise manner through written and verbal methods

  • Seek to acquire and share knowledge across the organization; harness diverse perspectives and experiences to address challenges quickly

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in systems engineering, data analytics, applied mathematics/statistics, engineering, operations research, or related technical field

  • Minimum 5 years of aviation experience with a bachelor’s degree; or 3 years with a master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience

  • Experience with data and statistical analysis tools (e.g., Python, PERL, Java, R, MATLAB, Tableau, SQL, NoSQL, etc.)

  • Experience in MS Office tools such as Excel, Project, Visio, PowerPoint, and Word

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with ability to describe and present complex technical concepts in relatable terms

  • Strong innovation, problem-solving, systems analysis, planning, organizational, and interpersonal skills

  • Desire to continuously learn new techniques and evolve approaches by regularly engaging in structured educational pursuits, personal research, and outreach to subject matter experts across the corporation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in aviation working operational integration issues

  • Demonstrated experience working effectively across Industry and Federal governments

  • Knowledge and/or experience of FAA regulations, policies, procedures, and processes and applications to legacy and new users of the U.S. National Airspace System

  • Strong understanding of various trade-offs in aviation, including technology, staffing, efficiency, environmental, etc., and ability to think strategically and assist in forming long-term strategies
