Department Summary:
The Advanced Transportation Operations Optimization Department (P222) in the Center for Integrated Transportation is seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic, and self-reliant candidates with strong interests in the integration of UAS, AAM and other non-traditional users into the U.S. National Airspace System. The ideal candidate will have experience in systems engineering, project management, people management, UAS and AAM operations, or similar areas and will join our department as a Lead Aviation Systems Engineer.
Roles & Responsibilities:
As a key member of the Advanced Transportation Operations Optimization team, you will collaborate closely with management; ATC experts; analysts; engineers; Local, State, and Federal government stakeholders; and Industry partners to tackle challenges related to the integration of UAS and AAM into the U.S. National Airspace System. You will gain deep insights into sponsor missions and leverage your technical expertise to drive problem-solving, innovation, informed decision-making, and operationalization of concepts. You will shape work, lead small teams and become an integral part of the project leadership team. Your responsibilities will include:
Serve as a subject matter expert on UAS and AAM integration into the U.S. National Airspace System
Collaborate with multiple stakeholders across Local, State, and Federal agencies as well as Industry to develop optimal solutions for UAS and AAM integration issues
Work with department and portfolio leadership to shape new work opportunities, to manage project teams, and to deliver successful outcomes for our sponsors
Participate in the development of operational solutions for our sponsors applying systems engineering best practices, facilitating evidence-based decision-making and delivering impactful outcomes for our sponsors
Communicate highly technical analyses and recommendations in a clear and concise manner, through written and verbal methods to a wide variety of technical and non-technical stakeholders
Seek to acquire and share knowledge across the organization; harness diverse perspectives and experiences to address challenges quickly
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in systems engineering, data analytics, applied mathematics, statistics, engineering, operations research, or related technical field
Minimum 8 years of aviation experience with a bachelor’s degree; or 6 years with a master’s degree; or 3 years with a PhD; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience
Demonstrated experience in in the UAS or AAM space working operational integration issues
Experience in MS Office tools such as Excel, Project, Visio, PowerPoint, and Word
Excellent written and verbal communications skills with ability to describe and present complex technical concepts in relatable terms
Strong innovation, problem-solving, systems analysis, planning, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Desire to continuously learn new techniques and evolve approaches by regularly engaging in structured educational pursuits, personal research, and outreach to subject matter experts across the corporation
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience working effectively across Industry and Federal, State and Local governments
Knowledge and experience of FAA regulations, policies, procedures, and processes and applications to new entrants in the U.S. National Airspace System
Strong understanding of trade-offs of regulation and policy with technology development, and ability to think strategically and assist in forming long-term strategies
