Department Summary:

Reporting directly to the Vice President, Diversity and Chief Sustainability Officer, the inaugural incumbent will be instrumental in advocating for accessibility within the workforce and working to ensure adherence to accessibility standards. The principal will address how products, technologies, and experiences are designed and developed to be usable for all physical, auditory, cognitive, and visual needs and will ensure legal governance from a physical environment and digital experience. The individual will be an integral advisor and consultant in building trusted partnerships within the Center for Operations, Outreach, and Legal (COOL), as well as across our enterprise with key stakeholders to provide support and guidance. The principal is a strategic partner, thought leader, and cultural ambassador in curating accessibility experiences that cultivate an inclusive environment for everyone.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Establish a corporate policy and strategic plan with accessibility standards, expectations, and metrics for improving the state of accessibility at MITRE.

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of accessibility guidelines, processes, and training in accordance with the Diversity and Chief Sustainability Office strategy.

  • Act as a technical accessibility subject matter expert liaison to cross-functional teams across the enterprise and provide strategic guidance in aligning and integrating new product development, processes, and policy creation to support the business goals.

  • Build collaborative relationships to identify opportunities to bridge the disability divide by partnering with product teams, designers, engineers, HR, IT, and others to set and measure progress against established business goals.

  • Leverage our employee business resource groups (BRGs) and other key stakeholders to drive innovation in accessibility and create listening ecosystems for these communities.

  • Cultivate an inclusive accessibility culture by creating awareness of how technology products and services can impact or be impacted by users with varying levels of ability and learning styles through education workshops, end user support, and audit activities.

  • Some travel will be required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • 10+ years of relevant work experience with a proven record in launching accessible features, improvements, and/or products at scale with cross-functional software development or technology teams.

  • 5+ years of experience in analysis, design, development, and/or testing of current Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) success criteria and accessibility testing tools for turning data into actionable insights.

  • Ability to distill technical knowledge of accessibility concepts and terminology into easy-to-understand terms with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of assistive technology devices for both desktop and mobile.

  • Expert knowledge of current accessibility laws and standards to curate learning curriculum and facilitate training and educational workshops.

  • Track record of advocacy for the disability community and passion for making technology accessible to everyone is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional certification (WAS; CPACC; CPWA) is preferred.

  • BA/BS degree in business, economics, HR, or related field
