Department Summary:

We are currently seeking a Chief Engineer to join the Cross-cutting Urgent Innovation Cell (CUIC), an organization that is unique to MITRE because:

We are looking for talented problem solvers with a passion for adapting emerging academic and commercial technologies to develop cross-cutting innovative solutions for the defense, intelligence, and civilian communities.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Strategic Impact

  • Develop a repeatable process to institutionalize the new MNS Futures concept to identify and prioritize the current and future most consequential national security challenges backed by quantitative evidence and operational analysis to shape R&D and direct work opportunities.

  • Drive the strategic direction of operational analysis and experimentation across CUIC to ensure alignment to critical national security challenges.

  • Serves as a technical subject matter expert on DoD and IC challenges across CUIC and MITRE.

Technical Quality

  • Drive technical quality across CUIC by defining and enforcing technical quality standards to include project scoping, peer reviews, knowledge management, verification of assumptions in mission areas such as space warfighting, space-based services, missile warning and tracking, campaign-level analysis, time-sensitive targeting, communications, distributed experimentation, and mission engineering.

  • Develop scalable processes and platform to accelerate the delivery of operational analysis with CUIC and across MITRE.

  • Drive consistency across CUIC technical products to include developing analysis templates.

Partnering and Mentoring

  • Mentor and develop staff

  • Develop and maintain partnerships across MITRE National Security, MITRE Labs, FFRDCs/UARCs, and other partners to accelerate the delivery of novel capabilities to the DoD and IC.

  • Shape MITRE R&D mission driven research challenges and innovation proposals to address across CUIC.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Day‐to‐day interface with CUIC Technical Directors, Resource Managers, and Operations Manager, Initiative Leads, CUIC Staff, and sponsors to develop trusted working relationships.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance

  • Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 10 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 7 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Experience interfacing with senior leaders tin the USG.

  • Experience performing cross-disciplinary work assessing concepts for physics-based analysis of national security challenges in operational contexts.

  • Experience with understanding simulation results, identifying areas for additional focus, and extracting critical lessons learned.

  • Experience with developing physics-based modeling and simulation tools and applying those tools to address research questions.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and capable of working with scientists, analysts, and technical software developers across several technical disciplines.

  • Experience in shaping and executing complex DoD and classified sponsor mission outcomes.

  • Success in setting and meeting strategic objectives and advancing short and long-term program goals.

  • History of team building, achieving team goals, and growing trust.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Prior roles required full responsibility/accountability for deliverables and outcomes -including definition, completion, and technical quality, as well as assuring consistency across the responsibility span. 

  • Effective in interacting with technical staff, analysts, and operators ranging from junior-level contributors to senior leaders in DoD.

  • Experience mentoring staff and leading teams of various sizes.

  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD degree and 15-20 years of experience in computer science, data science, applied mathematics/statistics, operation research, artificial intelligence, cyber, systems engineering, or other physical science/engineering fields.

  • Proficiency with modeling and simulation tools such as AFSIM.

  • Active SAP accesses

  • Familiarity with one or more of the following: aerodynamic systems, orbital mechanics, signal processing, sensor systems, and RF or EO/IR physics.
